Options are out there when doing full renovations or a new build, Spraying the trim is by far the best finish on any trim and doors, although it is costly, there is no better finish on trim and doors then spray. We use high end glidden / CIL paints, they absorb into your walls and ceiling more than any other brand and although you might new a 3rd cost to bring out the color, the finish is very beautiful.

Sheetrock 90
This dry compound when mixed will give you a superior fill that will set / shrink in 90 minutes, this will give a great first coat and a strong finish.
Drywall compound
This mud is used to install drywall tape and can be mixed with sheetrock 90 to strengthen the finish coat.
